Military marriages face unque challenges. In addition to regular marital adjustments, military families face the worries of surviving combat deployments, the adjustments of deployment separations and reunions (redeployments), and frequent changes due to life in a combat zone.
Soldiers and family members often face adjustment challenges with deployment cycles of preparing to be apart during deployment and then adjusting to each other's space and roles once back together. Eveyone needs some time to themselves and couples adjust to time together. Some soldiers return with signs of combat stress including anger, impulsive reactions, isolation from family often spending hours on the computer or video games, and the inability to enjoy activities they one time enjoyed - even marital fun times. These are common signs of soldiers who have been "downrange." These responses further complicate marital relations.
E. C. Hurley has been conducting marriage retreats for military couples since 1974. The first retreat was for Army drill sergeants at Ft Knox, KY. The retreat site was Monmouth Cave National Park, KY. Since that time he has conducted couples retreats in Germany, Denmark, England, Korea, and numberous locations throughout the United States. Being retired from the Army after 30 years of service, E. C. and Nancy Hurley understand the demands of military life; they are committed to serving military couples by providing couples retreats which are practical (couples say it helps), fun, and creates lasting positive memories.
