EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective means for treating distressing life evens, including combat traumas.  It was discovered in 1988 by Dr. Francine Shapiro, PhD, and has come to be recognized as one of the preferred models for treating depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  EMDR is an acelerated treatment process.  Soldiers are able to resolve their trauma issues without having to discuss the details of what happened.  The process stimulates the brain's memory system to do its own reprocessing without the soldier being retraumatized by telling the event.  EMDR is an evidence-based therapy recognized by such professional organizations as the American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, Department of Defense, the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS), the United Kindgom Department of Health, the Israeli National Counsel for Mental Health, and the Clinical Resource Efficiency Support Team of Ireland.

Dr. Hurley is an EMDR Certified Therapist, an Approved Consultant with the EMDR International Association, and a trainer for Part 1 and 2 trainings for EMDR Humanitarian Assistance Program (EMDR-HAP) and the U.S. Army.

For further information on EMDR visit the EMDR Institute website at
www.EMDRIA.org and the EMDR International Association website at http://www.EMDR.com.

EMDR Training and Consultation

Specialty training in treating combat trauma is offered at Soldier Center.  Learn about military culture, the impact of deployment and multiple deployments to a combat zone.  Dr. Hurley, who has spent 33 years in the Army, both in the United States and down range in a combat zone, educates participants on the impact of combat deployments.

In addition, seasoned consultants A. J. Popky, Gene Schwartz, and Jamie Zabukovic provide consultation to participants who join a treatment team working with soldiers with complex trauma.  You develop you confidence and competency in using EMDR in the treatment of complex trauma while working with these well established consultations.  Soldier Center has treatment rooms with adjacent observation rooms with one-way mirrors which enables the training team to observe and participate in the treatment of soldiers and family members as one clinician is in the treatment room and a team of participants are operating in the observation room.

Training is available for an extensive weekend, a full week experience or an entire year's training program.  You may receive consultation or, if you are a consultant in training you may receive consultaion of your consultation.

This training program is designed to move you in clinical competence from entry level basic skills through advanced competency in the use of EMDR in the treatment of complex combat trauma.  Phone Soldier Center at (931) 553-6981 for further information.

Hurley speaks to contractors (just back from Iraq) regarding symptoms of acute stress and posttraumatic stress following combat tours as drivers of big rigs and security personnel.  The meeting was held at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Knoxville, TN.  Media coverage (in the picture) included a film crew from the Dan Rather news organization and National Public Radio (NPR).
